In contrast to her famous husband, the life of Maria Barbara Bach, Johann Sebastian Bach’s first wife, is virtually unknown to us, apart from some basic biographical details. Max Volbers wants to change this state of affairs. For the Baroque Festival he designs a programme based around Maria Barbara’s family relationships with the rest of the Bach clan, connecting threads between events and compositions and creating a picture of a woman who may come very close to the real Maria Barbara. In an evocative ambiance in the night-time Abbey Church, he collaborates with Michael Schade and his musical partner Sebastian Wienand to fill the sacred space with music. Without doubt a special highlight will be the ›Melk Mary Song‹, one of the treasures of the Abbey library from the 12th century, which has been newly set to music by Johannes Schachtner and will be premiered by Michael Schade.
